Start up your pond in spring
In spring, your pond comes back to life. Plants start growing and fish awaken from their winter rest. It’s time to start up your pond! In this blog, we’ll tell you everything about the pond maintenance needed in spring.
Clean your pond
After winter, it is important to clean your pond. Remove sludge, loose leaves, and dead aquatic plants, and check the roots of the remaining plants for signs of decay. Trim them where necessary. It’s best to do this once the night frost has completely disappeared. This prevents plants from dying off and rotting afterwards.
Check the pond equipment
As your pond comes back to life in spring, it is essential that the technical equipment functions optimally.
Components can freeze and break during winter. Therefore, check all connections, pipes, hoses, and equipment for leaks or damage. Repair and clean everything thoroughly.
As temperatures rise and fish resume eating and producing waste, a properly functioning pond filter becomes very important. When the water temperature rises above 7°C, the filter and pump can be placed back in the correct position and switched on to purify the water.
A UV-C unit is indispensable in your koi or swimming pond. It is the solution against algae and green water. Replace your UV‑C lamp every spring for the best result.
Restore biological balance
Starting up your pond is important to restore the biological balance in the water. When the filter pump is switched off during winter, most bacteria in the pond and filter die off, including the beneficial bacteria responsible for breaking down harmful substances such as fish waste or plant debris. By restarting your pond in spring, you promote the recovery of the bacterial culture. It takes several weeks for enough microorganisms to develop and establish biological balance. To speed up this natural process, you can add beneficial pond bacteria.
Check water quality
To fully enjoy your pond, the water quality must be in top condition. Therefore, regularly check your water parameters, also when starting your pond in spring. The most important water values are: pH (acidity), KH (carbonate hardness), GH (general hardness), ammonium, nitrite, and nitrate. You can measure these using test strips, liquid test kits, or electronic measuring devices. To achieve and maintain ideal water quality, you can add water treatment and water improvement products. This ensures your (swimming or koi) pond stays in perfect condition!
